Wal-Mart heiress in cheat probe returns diploma - Former roommate says she did homework for $20,000 [Oct. 26th, 2005|04:13 am]

Elizabeth Paige Laurie's name was on a sports arena when a former University of Southern California roommate alleged the Wal-Mart heiress paid her $20,000 to do her homework. Now it isn't even on a USC diploma.

Laurie, the granddaughter of Wal-Mart co-founder Bud Walton, has returned her degree, nearly a year after Elena Martinez told ABC's "20/20" that she had written term papers and done assignments for Laurie for three-and-a-half years.

"Paige Laurie voluntarily has surrendered her degree and returned her diploma to the university. She is not a graduate of USC," the school said in a statement dated September 30 but not widely disseminated until the school newspaper wrote about it late last week. "This concludes the university's review of the allegations concerning Ms. Laurie."

USC spokesman James Grant said Wednesday the university had no further comment. Laurie had been given a bachelor's degree by the USC Annenberg School for Communication in May 2004.

After the homework allegations surfaced last November, the University of Missouri changed the name of what was then Paige Sports Arena.

Laurie's billionaire parents, Bill and Nancy Laurie, had received naming rights in exchange for donating $25 million toward the building's construction. Nancy Laurie is Walton's daughter.

A call seeking comment from Bill Laurie at his Paige Sports Entertainment company was not immediately returned. The family has repeatedly declined to comment on the cheating allegation.

Martinez has an unlisted phone number and could not be reached for comment.

At the time of the "20/20" broadcast, Martinez said she dropped out of USC because she couldn't afford the tuition. She said she learned a great deal by doing Laurie's class work.

Hi, I just joined this community in hopes of finding some moral support around lj-dom. If anyone is interested in my ongoing legal battle with Kaiser Permanente, a chronicle it on my lj corphq. Kaiser Permanente sued me because I used my lj to draw attention to a web site they had posted on the Internet for three or four years. The state of California has now fined Kaiser $200,000 for posting the site.

Please feel free to Friend me. :-)

Ps. I'm going to x-post this note on a few other communities today, so please don't think I'm spamming.

AFA and intelligent design - to be taught in american schools [Aug. 30th, 2005|02:57 am]

Wtf… fuck this “intelligent design” bullshit. Just another stupid fundamentalist label to make religion disguised and somehow easier for people to swallow.

Follow the link below to take action on this important issue. Go to </a>

CAREFUL – they trick you… the spot to vote is on this link too before you sign your info, and the yes is already checked off. Use the postal code 1001 for n.y. (if you don't live in the states)and give a FAKE email addy/name. and be sure to pass it along!

ne caution about the 'fine' xians at afa.net, though:

NEVER use the form they provide to "send a letter to your Congressman/Senator" or their "toll-free number" to "call your congressman/senator." They're almost certainly shams, and any contrary remarks substituted with their own boilerplate, if not simply erased. There is no single "toll free number" through which you can reach any congressman/senator, but of course there are privately owned (such as by the afa) numbers with answering machines that will tally counts of how many times the number is called, which they probably blanketly assume are all in support if their position, and then they proudly lobby congress with a big fat number of "support calls."

If you want to really reach your legislators, go to their own websites and use what they provide as a contact form or direct email address (they all give at least one or the other) or phone #. Start at www.house.gov or www.senate.gov.

[mood |annoyedannoyed]
[music |Ripsipiirakka - Rafaelin Enkeli]

Our Governor in California, Schwarzenegger, is attempting to push a drastic move to cut back budget- the early euthanizing of stray animals.

"Schwarzenegger wants to repeal California's comprehensive law forcing animal shelters to hold stray cats and dogs up to six days before killing them, a budget-cutting move that has enraged pet adoption groups.

As a favor to the state's cash-poor counties and cities, Schwarzenegger has asked the state Legislature to reverse the 1998 law, which makes adoption of wayward pets the first priority of shelters instead of quickly putting them to death. The law is dubbed the Hayden Act, after former Santa Monica state senator and activist Tom Hayden."

..."The Schwarzenegger administration said repealing the Hayden Act could save local governments up to $14 million. As proposed, shelters would be allowed to kill dogs and cats after holding them just 72 hours, regardless of whether the shelters are open to the public during those three days.

But animal rights activists believe cats and dogs should not be sacrificed in an effort to save money amid the state's budget shortfall."

This really bugs me. Is California in such a desperate situation that anything to help would be considered and applied? Is this right to do, to support the state better, or completely wrong to consider such a cruel answer?

more things that don't seem to add up in Berg case. [May. 19th, 2004|12:19 am]

[music |Muslimgauze - Jerusalem Artichoke]

A user on this message board, summed some of the bits of cracks and pieces of this controversial side of the Berg beheading case. At the bottm of his post are useful sites with further info on the matter FYI.
Article on tribe board here: http://www.tribemagazine.com/board/showthread.php?s=&threadid=67991&highlight=berg+video+false.

Points of Discrepancy</b></u>
1) Most people replied by asserting that the execution occurred as retribution to the abuse photos that had surfaced, but you have to ask yourself - do these terrorists, who are clearly capable of brainwashing people to the point where they are willing to kill and be killed for their beliefs, really have no concept of political tact? Here they are, the whole world screaming at the US for hypocrisy and injustice over these pictures, and they perform and publish this execution right in the heat of the scandal. In other words, these masters of brainwashing and spin and deception release a video of a despicable act just as the US, their sworn enemy, is being globally grilled. Does this make sense to you?

2) Second, I wonder what the standard issue chair is at Abu Ghraib prison?
(In link 2 pics one of Lynndie England the other of N.Berg sitting in the same type of plastic lawn chair)

3) Is it not interesting that the wall colour at Abu Ghraib prison is identical to that of the video?

4) Is it not also interesting that Berg is wearing the same orange jumpsuit worn by prisoners at Abu Ghraib prison? Sure, you say, perhaps he was kidnapped directly from the prison (as stupid as this sounds, anyway) - but then can you please explain (7)?

5) Is it also not interesting that the timecodes in the video jump back and forth?

6) Is it also not interesting that Berg did not exhibit any of the convulsions that typically accompany decapitation? http://www.ahsc.arizona.edu/uac/iacuc/rodents/avma.htm I am suggesting here that Berg was already dead when the decapitation occurred (which accounts for 5). Before you go calling me crazy, please review the evidence; why did he not exhibit the convulsions that go hand in hand with decapitation (especially such an extended one)?

7) Is it not curious that the US denies contact with Berg, and yet his friends and family insist that he told them he was being held by the US? Huh? Why?

Another tape oddity - the men SPEAK RUSSIAN for several seconds. Not only that, but they speak Arabic with Russian accents. That's right, in the final seconds of the tape, one of the men speaks in Russian. Those here who understand Russian (and have the stomach to view that final seconds of the video) can verify this. Those who speak Arabic will be able to verify that these men speak Arabic in Russian accents.

9) Finally (the physical evidence that will convince you in case you already aren't)...
You will notice, in watching the video, that 6 times, a gold ring flashes on the hand of the executioner. What is the problem? Islam completely and utterly forbids men to wear gold rings. This fanatical Muslim, willing to kill in a gut wrenching manner, and be killed for his beliefs, is violating one of the clear prohibitions of his religion? Really? DOES THIS MAKE SENSE TO YOU?

10) Nick Berg understands Arabic, but sits calmly while statement is read, waiting to be killed. Hmm?

11) One of the executioners is wearing Air Jordans. WHAT?

12) The "terrorists" signed the video, yet they wear hoods and masks. Why?

13) The "terrorists" have lily white hands.

14) The video time is in US Military English. What the hell?

and the plot thickens....? [May. 18th, 2004|12:03 pm]

Berg Video: "Someone with U.S. military cap seen in frame"
again: a word of warning to sensitive viewers.

"His neck, left ear and part of his cap and visor can be seen. We have prepared an animated gif with just the relevant frames that clearly shows this at Animated Photo 7. Look at the right hand side as someone with a military cap, possibly with a second video camera, pokes his head into the video. Compare this animated gif with the MP whose cap is circled on Photo 4."

Is this now to be believed?
Is this "faked" in some way?
Is that circled head in the picture below even wearing a hat? Why is it fuzzy and hard to tell?
It's odd, and a little funny and unnerving seeing the two pictures side by side like that. Torture war reactions from both sides. Both depicting themselves as savages, as despicable members of the human race. And all this in the name of war. At what cost? How much more of this vicious cycle be it real or fake, will we have to endure. Enough of this bullying around on the playground, the flexing of the muscles.

Who the f*ck can you believe? If, as some have thought the US militarily is behind this, as well as the prison mess, wtf!
seriously... it just gets worse and worse. How is anyone supposed to find out the "truth". Is truth even relevant anymore? Do people only hear and believe what they want to in the end anyways, despite what proof is in front of their eyes?
Seriously... wipe out the government, and rebuild and try it again.. there is FAR too much speculation, and has been for years.

Would the whole world benefit, if the empire known as the United States of America, was to topple?

violence and children [May. 16th, 1998|09:11 pm]

Would you allow your child if you had one, to participate or consume what are considered “violent” toys or media or games?

Do you think violence in media and/or video games or pretend games that children are subjected to and consume, affect them consciously and/or subconsciously, and how, in what ways?
ex. implications at present and developments stages as well as teen and adulthood.

How would you as a parent or guardian set rules for them and enforce them, where would you sit?

(sorry if this is badly worded in anyway... lack of sleep.)

more on war [May. 13th, 2004|08:51 am]

- ok so how many of these people were innocent, and citizens??
Blood on the hands.

And just a little reminder about the start of the war, "Best Argument Against Invading Iraq" by Keith Preston from anti-state.com.

In Somalia during the Bakara Market incident (Blackhawk Down), thousands of Somalis lost their lives, and a handful of American Soldiers died with one taken prisoner. But, after seeing 2 American bodies being dragged through the streets of Somalia, the US-led contingent left. Through brutality and ruthlessness, the Somalis got exactly what they wanted. What did this show the world at large? That such tactics work. REALLY work. In 3rd world countries, life is cheap, but such a concept is offensive to "Western" sensibilities, and is therefore used against us.

In Somalia, soldiers spoke of how the Somalis would surround themselves with women and children while shooting at Americans. In Vietnam, the VC taught kids how to throw grenades. In Iraq, Saddam built military installations next door to hospitals and schools. These people knew the outrage that would come from the death of 'innocent' women and children, and exploited that as much as they could.
